Shooter Hunt (MIN) vs. Jay Jackson (CHC)

I'm currently participating in a minors phase of a fantasy league I recently joined and ran into an interesting situation while trying to rebuild the minors pitching staff left by the previous owner. I spent most of the 4th round targeting Shooter Hunt from the Twins as many top 100 talents had been drafted the previous year and the ones available were already gone. However, I decided to go with a personal favorite, Jay Jackson, and am wondering why only some are paying attention to his extremely impressive debut.

Let's compare the two:

Hunt Jackson
Draft Rd. 1S 9
Age 22.7 21.5
Height 6'2 1/2" 6'1"
Weight 190 195
Hi Level A- A+
K/9 12.16 12.96
BB/9 5.9 2.34
ERA 3.58 2.88

Yet Sickels has Hunt ranked as a B with Jackson earning a B-.

Few would argue both Hunt and Jackson have plenty of work to do with Hunt needing to improve his control and Jackson his ground ball percentage. Additionally, Jackson's being a two way player in college also meant he had to split his time in college between pitching and hitting/defense. With that said, his athleticism could allow him to make up for lost time quickly. Remember, at the start of 2010, Jackson will STILL be younger than Hunt is now with an additional year of development under his belt.

Keith Law ranked Jackson very late in his top 100 and discussed his possibly being a power arm out of the pen. While I love the rank, Jackson seems to have too much projection in him to hang a label just yet.

As for the draft, I wound up moving away from Hunt as Dan Gutierrez of the Royals also seemed like a much better pick at this point. If Hunt is still around in a couple of rounds, his perceived value may force my hand. However, he's simply a little old to be getting knocked around in A- and his control leaves me questioning his long term value.

Hunt ran into a situation where he was rushed. He was dominant in short season, but they then moved him up and he wasn't ready. Next year you should see a different Hunt, one that can handle the minor league movement better.

I understand what you are saying chem, but Shooter was an older college pitcher than most. Jackson, Lance Lynn, and other players drafted lower advanced further. That worries me a little.

He might not have amazing control as of right now, but he will get there. I mean the twins have one of the best pitching staffs, so there must be a reason that he was chosen. I think he will prove people wrong this year. He will become more comfortable as he moves along, and he will know exactly how to pitch around people. I think it will be a promising year.

HEY ANONYMOUS CURRAN FROM NORTH JERSEY: WHAT EXACTLY IS A SHIRTHEAD????
DNA DOES PREDOMINATE- SHOOTER COMES FROM A FAMILY HERITAGE OF STRONG VALUES AND PERSONAL ETHICS - NOT JUST IN ATHLETICS, BUT IN ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE - AND THAT IS OVER AND ABOVE THE HARDWORKING AND TALENTED ATHLETE HE IS.
