Jefry Marte was signed by the New York Mets out of the Dominican Republic for a 550K bonus in 2007. Now 17, he is tearing up the GCL with a .330/.396/.574 line. For a guy who would be entering his senior year in high school in the U.S., his performance has been sensational. I can see him entering the 2009 season as a borderline top 5 Mets prospect and possibly a top 100 player by 2010. As I said in the Handyman 25, I spent about a week shopping Josh Vitters thinking Marte would put up similar numbers as a replacement while I cashed in Vitters in a package for a top pitching prospect.
With the hype surrounding Mets prospects in general, Marte is a must add in all deep leagues with minors. He's a long way from the bigs, but by 2011, his trade value could be huge. My only concern is the possible position shift of Wilmer Flores from SS to 3B and the fact that David Wright should be a Mets mainstay for another decade. With the likelihood of his being blocked, he may need a change of address to receive a shot, but that's a number of years away.
